A local Internet real estate guide has big plans for the future.

N ick Streuli and Charlie Gunningham are passionate in their belief that their on-line property guide,  Charlie, a 36-year-old Briton, also made a dramatic U-turn in his career when he paired up with Nick.

An economics graduate, he has 13 years experience teaching and lecturing in economics, management, marketing and accounting in England, Singapore, and Australia. Before the advent of he had a full-time position as Head of Commerce at Hale School.

Charlie says his father had always seen him as a headmaster at some time in the future, “and then I went and gave it all up”.

He adds: “But when he and my mother came over from England on a holiday recently he saw the office and the web site and understood what we were doing and thought it was a good idea.”

Charlie and his Singaporean wife, Lisa, came to Perth in 1997. The next year Charlie was awarded the Top Student Prize for his MBA at UWA where he specialized in marketing.

He and Nick say they expect their business to “go national” by the end of this year. They are in no hurry to float it on the stock exchange, however, planning instead to reward their small group of investors who include four of their university professors. Pty Ltd can be contacted on 9389 5833 and can be found on the Internet at, can be the inspiration for other IT companies to make Perth their South-East Asian base. The pair, who met while completing their MBA degrees at the University of Western Australia Graduate School of Management, started up the business just five months ago.

Real Estate companies list their properties on the website, which features interactive maps showing exact positions and also provides detailed information about schools and businesses, cultural attractions and community services.

Nick, a 45-year-old Swiss national, spent much of his school life in the United States and after university moved into financial management, treasury and trading in Switzerland and New York. In 1987 in Switzerland he started his own hedge fund, Streuli Brown and Co, which he says traded successfully for seven years and grew to $US6.5 million. He closed the fund in 1995 to join ED & F Mann Investments, where he co-managed the team that set up, tested and implemented the AHL group of investment products.

“But it was all just money and it wasn’t at all creative,” he says. “My wife’s home town was Perth and I agreed to come here to live, as long as I could go to school. That’s what I did, and now I’m building something brilliant.”
