DOLA data used to create award-winning E-commerce site

30 June 2000

Data sets from the Department of Land Administration have proved invaluable to Internet company aussiehome.com.

The Nedlands-based enterprise used this information to create an interactive website that was named WA's most innovative e-commerce site at the Yellow Pages Information Technology Awards. DOLA Geographic Services Manager Peter Eddy said data sets are components of digital maps separately detailing themes like street addresses, shire boundaries, schools and street names. "When grouped together according to needs, these create detailed images that can be used to make informative maps," he said.

aussiehome.com co-founder and co-director Charlie Gunningham said his company used the data sets to depict the exact locations of properties for sale as well as surrounding amenities such as schools, hospitals, sporting venues and police stations. "The maps cover 238 suburbs and we have very good coverage of properties for sale in between 60 to 80 of those," Mr Gunningham said. Fellow Director and Co-Founder, Nick Streuli, added "Visitors can zoom in on particular suburbs and even take virtual tours of listed properties. All details are updated twice a day to ensure they are current. "This is the first site of its kind in Australia and, quite possibly, the world."

aussiehome.com is proving very popular, attracting 10,000 visitors in May alone. More than 50 real estate agents are already paying to be involved in the site, with more joining every day.
